Landscaping
Do you offer free consultations?
Yes! We offer free, no-obligation consultations for homeowners throughout the northwest Twin Cities metro. During your consultation, we’ll meet with you at your property to discuss your goals, evaluate the existing landscape or irrigation system, answer your questions, and provide professional recommendations tailored to your home and budget.
Whether you’re planning a complete landscape renovation, installing an irrigation system, refreshing rock or mulch, repairing drainage issues, or simply looking for ideas, we’re here to help. After the consultation, we’ll prepare a detailed estimate outlining the recommended scope of work so you know exactly what to expect before making any decisions.
Our goal is to make the planning process simple, informative, and pressure-free, so you can move forward with confidence.
How long does a landscaping project take?
Every landscaping project is unique, so the timeline depends on the size of the project, the scope of work, weather conditions, and material availability. Smaller projects, such as mulch or rock refreshes, planting, or landscape edging, can often be completed in a day or two. Larger projects involving grading, drainage, retaining walls, patios, irrigation, or complete landscape renovations may take anywhere from several days to a few weeks.
Before work begins, we’ll provide you with an estimated schedule and keep you informed throughout the project. If weather or unforeseen conditions affect the timeline, we’ll communicate with you every step of the way so you’re never left wondering what’s happening.
Our focus is on doing the job right—not rushing through it. We take pride in delivering quality workmanship while keeping projects moving as efficiently as possible.
Can you help design my landscape?
Absolutely! Whether you have a clear vision or don’t know where to start, we’re happy to help design a landscape that complements your home, fits your lifestyle, and stays within your budget.
During your consultation, we’ll walk your property with you, discuss how you use your outdoor space, and talk through your preferences for materials, plants, colors, and maintenance. We’ll offer professional recommendations based on your property’s layout, drainage, sun exposure, and long-term performance to create a landscape that’s both beautiful and practical.
Our goal is to design outdoor spaces that you’ll enjoy for years to come. From simple landscape refreshes to complete front or backyard transformations, we’ll work with you to develop a plan that reflects your vision while adding lasting value and curb appeal to your home.
Do you remove old landscaping?
Yes! In fact, most of our landscape projects begin with removing existing materials to create a clean foundation for the new installation. We can remove old landscape rock, mulch, edging, shrubs, overgrown plants, small trees, sod, weeds, and other unwanted landscape materials, then properly haul away and dispose of the debris.
Starting with a clean slate allows us to properly grade the area, address any drainage concerns, install new landscape fabric or weed barrier when appropriate, and ensure your new landscape is built to last. Whether you’re updating a single planting bed or completely renovating your outdoor space, we’ll handle the entire process from demolition and cleanup to the finished installation.
Our goal is to leave your property looking better than we found it—with no mess left behind and a landscape you’ll be proud to come home to.
Do I need to be home during the project?
Not necessarily. In most cases, you do not need to be home while we’re working on your project. Before work begins, we’ll review the project details with you, answer any questions, and make sure everyone is on the same page regarding the scope of work and your expectations.
Throughout the project, we’ll keep you updated on our progress and communicate with you if any questions or unexpected conditions arise. Our team treats every property with the same level of care and respect as if it were our own, so you can feel confident knowing your project is in good hands.
We do ask that someone be available for the final walkthrough whenever possible. This gives us the opportunity to review the completed project together, answer any questions, and ensure you’re completely satisfied with the finished result.
Rock & Mulch
Is rock or mulch better?
The best choice depends on your property’s needs, your personal style, and how much maintenance you’re looking for. Both rock and mulch offer unique benefits, and we’re happy to help you decide which option is the best fit for your landscape.
Decorative rock is long-lasting, low maintenance, and provides a clean, finished appearance that doesn’t need to be replaced regularly. It’s an excellent choice for homeowners looking for durability and minimal upkeep.
Mulch offers a more natural look and provides benefits for plants by helping retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and gradually add nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. However, mulch does require periodic refreshing to maintain its appearance and effectiveness.
Many of our customers choose a combination of both. We often recommend mulch around trees, shrubs, and flower beds where plant health is the priority, and decorative rock in areas where long-term durability and low maintenance are preferred. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose the option that best complements your home, landscaping, and lifestyle.
Do you install weed barrier?
Yes. We install a weed barrier on most of our landscape projects, selecting the type of barrier that’s best suited for the material being installed and the specific needs of your landscape.
For decorative rock installations, we typically install 10-mil polyethylene to provide excellent weed suppression, separate the rock from the soil, and create a durable, long-lasting foundation.
For mulch installations, we use a professional-grade landscape fabric that helps reduce weed growth while still allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the soil and plant roots.
While no weed barrier can completely eliminate weeds—since wind-blown seeds can still germinate on top of the mulch or rock—it greatly reduces weed growth and makes ongoing maintenance much easier. Combined with proper site preparation and professional installation, a quality weed barrier helps keep your landscape looking clean and beautiful for years to come.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Mulch doesn’t usually need to be completely replaced every year, but it should be refreshed every 1–2 years to maintain its appearance and continue providing the greatest benefits to your landscape. Over time, mulch naturally fades in color, decomposes, and settles, reducing its effectiveness.
In many cases, adding a fresh layer of mulch is all that’s needed. However, if the existing mulch has broken down significantly, become compacted, or accumulated excessive organic material, we may recommend removing some or all of the old mulch before installing new.
Regularly refreshing your mulch helps suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and give your landscape a clean, well-maintained appearance. During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your existing mulch and recommend the most cost-effective option based on its condition.
How deep should landscape rock be?
For most decorative landscape rock installations, we recommend a finished depth of 2 to 3 inches. This provides enough coverage to create a clean, full appearance while helping suppress weeds, retain moisture, and keep the rock from shifting or exposing the weed barrier underneath.
The ideal depth can vary depending on the size and type of rock being used. Larger decorative rock may require a slightly deeper installation, while smaller rock often looks and performs best closer to 2 inches. During your consultation, we’ll recommend the appropriate depth based on the material you choose and the specific needs of your landscape.
Proper preparation is just as important as the rock itself. We take the time to shape and grade the area, install a durable weed barrier when appropriate, and spread the rock evenly to create a finished landscape that looks great and requires less maintenance for years to come.
Irrigation
Do you install irrigation systems?
Yes! We design and install complete residential irrigation systems that are customized to your property’s size, layout, and watering needs. Every system is carefully planned to provide efficient, even coverage while minimizing water waste and keeping your lawn and landscaping healthy.
We use professional-grade materials and install each system with long-term reliability and ease of maintenance in mind. Whether you’re installing a sprinkler system for a newly built home, adding irrigation after a landscape renovation, or replacing an outdated system, we’ll design a solution that works for your property.
We also install smart Wi-Fi irrigation controllers that automatically adjust watering schedules based on local weather conditions, helping conserve water while taking the guesswork out of lawn care. After installation, we’ll walk you through how your system operates and answer any questions so you feel confident using it.
Can you winterize my irrigation system?
Yes! We provide professional irrigation winterization services to help protect your sprinkler system from freezing temperatures and costly damage during the Minnesota winter. Using commercial-grade air compressors designed specifically for irrigation systems, we safely blow out each zone to remove water from the underground lines, valves, sprinkler heads, and backflow components.
Proper winterization is one of the most important maintenance services you can perform on your irrigation system. Even a small amount of water left in the pipes can freeze, expand, and cause cracked pipes, broken fittings, damaged valves, or sprinkler heads—leading to expensive repairs in the spring.
Whether we installed your irrigation system or another company did, we’re happy to winterize it. We recommend scheduling your blowout before the first hard freeze to ensure your system is fully protected for the season.
How do I know if my irrigation system needs repair?
There are several signs that your irrigation system may need attention. If you notice dry spots, overly wet areas, low water pressure, leaking sprinkler heads, water pooling in your yard, unusually high water bills, or sprinkler heads that don’t pop up, rotate, or spray properly, it’s a good idea to have your system inspected. You may also notice zones that won’t turn on, won’t shut off, or a controller that’s displaying error messages.
Many irrigation problems start small but can become much more expensive if they’re left unaddressed. A simple leak or misaligned sprinkler head can waste thousands of gallons of water over the course of a season while leaving parts of your lawn under-watered.
At Sandvig Services, we’ll thoroughly inspect your irrigation system, identify the cause of the problem, explain your repair options, and provide honest recommendations before any work begins. Our goal is to get your system operating efficiently so your lawn and landscaping receive the right amount of water without unnecessary waste.
What areas do you service for irrigation?

Sod & Plants
Do you install sod?
Yes! We provide professional sod installation for both new lawns and lawn replacements. Whether you’re starting from bare soil, replacing a damaged or patchy lawn, or completing a landscape renovation, we can install a healthy, beautiful lawn that’s ready to establish quickly.
A successful lawn starts with proper preparation. Before laying sod, we remove existing grass when needed, prepare and grade the soil, correct low spots, and create a smooth, even surface to give your new lawn the best possible foundation. Once the sod is installed, we’ll provide watering and care instructions to help it establish strong roots and thrive.
We source high-quality sod that’s well-suited for Minnesota’s climate, giving you a lush, durable lawn that enhances the appearance and value of your home.
What’s the best time to install sod in Minnesota?
The best times to install sod in Minnesota are spring and fall, when cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall help new grass establish strong roots. However, with proper installation and watering, sod can be successfully installed throughout the entire growing season.
Spring is ideal because the soil is warming up and the grass has plenty of time to establish before summer. Fall is another excellent time to install sod, as cooler temperatures reduce stress on the new lawn while still allowing roots to grow before winter. Summer installations are also possible but require more frequent watering and extra care during periods of heat.
No matter what time of year your sod is installed, proper soil preparation, grading, and consistent watering during the first few weeks are the keys to developing a healthy, long-lasting lawn. We’ll provide detailed watering and maintenance instructions so your new lawn gets off to the best possible start.
Do you plant trees and shrubs?
Yes! We professionally install a wide variety of trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and other landscape plants to enhance the beauty, privacy, and value of your property. Whether you’re adding a single feature tree, replacing overgrown landscaping, or creating an entirely new landscape design, we’ll help you choose plants that thrive in Minnesota’s climate and complement your home.
Proper planting is essential for long-term success. We take the time to prepare the planting area, set each tree or shrub at the correct depth, improve the soil when needed, and finish the installation with mulch to help retain moisture and protect the roots. We also provide watering and care recommendations to help your new plants become well established.
From flowering trees and evergreen privacy screens to foundation plantings and low-maintenance shrubs, we’ll help you create a landscape that’s beautiful, functional, and built to grow for years to come.
Will you help choose the right plants for my yard?
Absolutely! Choosing the right plants is one of the most important parts of creating a beautiful, long-lasting landscape. During your consultation, we’ll help you select trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials, and other plants that are well-suited for your property’s unique conditions and Minnesota’s climate.
We consider factors such as sunlight, soil conditions, drainage, available space, maintenance preferences, and your overall design goals before making recommendations. Whether you’re looking for colorful blooms, year-round interest, privacy screening, low-maintenance landscaping, or plants that attract pollinators, we’ll help you choose options that fit your vision and thrive for years to come.
Our goal is to create a landscape that’s not only beautiful on installation day but continues to grow and look great season after season.
Scheduling
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend scheduling your project as early as possible, especially during the spring and summer when our calendar fills up quickly. While we occasionally have openings for smaller projects or repairs, larger landscaping and irrigation projects are often booked several weeks in advance.
Booking early allows us to reserve time on our schedule, coordinate material orders, and ensure everything is ready before your project begins. If you’re planning a project around a graduation party, family gathering, home sale, or another important event, letting us know in advance gives us the best opportunity to meet your desired timeline.
Even if you’re not ready to start right away, we’re happy to schedule a free consultation, discuss your ideas, and help you plan ahead. The earlier we begin the planning process, the smoother your project will be from start to finish.
What if weather delays my project?
Minnesota weather can be unpredictable, and sometimes rain or other unfavorable conditions make it unsafe or impractical to continue certain types of landscaping work. While weather delays can be frustrating, our priority is protecting your property and ensuring your project is completed to the highest standard—not rushing work in conditions that could compromise the finished result.
If weather affects your schedule, we’ll keep you informed every step of the way. We believe clear communication is just as important as quality workmanship, so we’ll let you know why a delay is necessary, provide updates as conditions change, and get your project back on the schedule as soon as it’s appropriate to do so.
Whenever possible, we may continue with portions of the project that aren’t affected by the weather, allowing us to keep progress moving while ensuring the final result meets our standards.
Do you work on weekends?
In most cases, no. We believe our team does their best work when they’re well-rested, so we try to keep weekends reserved for recovery and time with family after a long, physically demanding workweek.
Landscaping and irrigation work is physically intensive, and giving our crew time to recharge helps ensure they return ready to provide the quality craftsmanship and attention to detail our customers expect.
That said, there are occasional situations where we’ll work on a weekend to accommodate a customer’s schedule for a consultation, or emergency irrigation repair. When that happens, it’s the exception rather than the rule.
Our commitment is to deliver exceptional results while maintaining a healthy work-life balance for the people who make those results possible.

We believe every great project starts with a conversation, and we’re committed to making the scheduling process simple, responsive, and stress-free from the very beginning.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. We require a 50% deposit before your project begins. The deposit allows us to secure your spot on our schedule, order materials, and begin preparing for your installation.
The remaining 50% balance is due upon completion of the project during the final walkthrough. At that time, we’ll review the completed work with you, answer any questions, and ensure everything has been completed to the high standards you expect from Sandvig Services.
Our goal is to provide a straightforward, transparent process with no hidden fees or surprises, so you’ll always know what to expect from the moment you book your project until it’s complete.
Do you offer payment plans?
At this time, we do not offer in-house payment plans or financing. However, we understand that larger landscaping and irrigation projects are a significant investment.
If financing would help make your project possible, we’re happy to connect you with a trusted financing provider who may be able to help. We’ll gladly point you in the right direction so you can explore options that fit your budget and timeline.
If you have questions about project costs or would like to discuss different scope options, we’re also happy to work with you to develop a plan that meets your needs.
Warranty
Do you warranty your work?
Yes. Sandvig Services stands behind the quality of our workmanship and provides a one-year limited warranty on contractor- and subcontractor-supplied labor and materials beginning on the date of substantial project completion.
Our warranty does not apply to materials supplied by the homeowner or to existing materials that are removed, relocated, or reinstalled as part of the project. While we take great care during every installation, we cannot guarantee the condition or performance of previously used materials.
After the one-year warranty period, any manufacturer’s warranty on eligible products is handled directly through the manufacturer. Our warranty also does not cover damage caused by improper maintenance, misuse, normal wear and tear, or repairs performed by another contractor during the warranty period.
If you ever have a concern about your project, we encourage you to contact us directly. We’re committed to standing behind our work and will make every reasonable effort to address any workmanship-related issues covered under our warranty.
Is plant material warranted?
In most cases, no. Most nurseries do not offer warranties on plant material purchased by landscape contractors, so we are unable to provide a warranty on trees, shrubs, perennials, or other plants that we purchase and install.
For customers who would like the added peace of mind of a nursery warranty, we often recommend purchasing the plant material directly from the nursery whenever possible. Many nurseries offer warranties to retail customers that are not available to contractors. We’re more than happy to help you select the right plants for your landscape and can even pick them up and transport them to your property as part of your project if needed.
No matter who purchases the plants, we take great care to install them using industry best practices and will provide guidance on proper watering and maintenance to give your new landscape the best opportunity for long-term success.
What if something goes wrong after the job is done?
Your satisfaction is important to us. If you have a concern after your project is complete, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible. We’ll listen to your concerns, evaluate the situation, and work with you to determine the best solution.
If the issue is related to our workmanship and falls within the terms of our one-year limited warranty, we’ll make it right. Even if the concern isn’t covered under warranty, we’re always happy to answer questions, provide guidance, and discuss available repair or maintenance options.
We take pride in building lasting relationships with our customers, not just completing projects. Our goal is for you to feel confident that we’re here to support you long after the work is finished.
