Care Guide

Heavy Rain & Flood Recovery

After heavy rain or flooding, your landscape needs a calm, methodical response — not a rush. This guide walks you through what to check, what to wait on, and when to bring in a professional so your lawn, plantings, and hardscape recover the right way.

Safety First

Wait for Water to Recede

Do not walk on or work in standing water. Floodwater can hide debris, sharp objects, and electrical hazards, and it may carry contaminants. Wait until water has fully receded and the ground is safe to access before beginning any recovery work.

Avoid Compaction on Saturated Soil

Saturated soil compacts easily under foot traffic, vehicles, and equipment. Stay off wet lawns and beds until they have drained and firmed up. Compaction damages soil structure and can undo the natural drainage your landscape needs to recover.

Assessing Lawn Damage

Signs of Compaction & Waterlogging

Look for standing puddles that linger long after the rain, spongy turf, and a sour or musty smell. Yellowing grass and slow drainage signal that roots have been starved of oxygen and the soil beneath is compacted and waterlogged.

Erosion & Bare Areas

Fast-moving water can strip away topsoil and seed, leaving bare patches, exposed roots, and shallow washout channels. Note where soil has washed away and where sediment has piled up so you can plan regrading and reseeding.

Immediate Lawn Recovery

First Steps

Once the lawn has dried enough to walk on, gently rake away silt, debris, and matted grass to let air and light reach the crowns. Hold off on mowing until the turf has firmed up and resumed active growth.

Reseeding & Drainage

Reseed bare and washed-out areas once the soil is workable, topdressing with fresh soil where needed to restore grade. Aerate compacted zones to improve drainage and consider where persistent pooling may call for a longer-term drainage fix.

Trees & Shrubs After Flooding

Structural Assessment

Check trees and large shrubs for leaning trunks, lifted or exposed root plates, and cracked limbs. Saturated soil loosens a tree’s anchorage, so a plant that looks fine today may be at risk of falling. Flag any lean or heaving for closer inspection.

Root & Bark Care

Gently wash silt off bark and away from the root flare so buried crowns can breathe. Avoid piling mulch or soil against trunks. Prolonged submersion stresses roots, so watch for wilting or early leaf drop in the weeks that follow.

Mulch Beds & Perennial Gardens

Displaced Mulch & Sediment

Floodwater floats mulch out of beds and drops silt in its place. Rake mulch back into position, remove heavy sediment crusts that can smother plants, and top up thin areas so beds keep their moisture and weed protection.

Perennial Assessment

Clear silt from crowns and foliage so perennials can photosynthesize again. Trim damaged stems and give plants time before deciding what survived — many perennials rebound from their roots even when the top growth looks lost.

Hardscape & Drainage

Pavers & Retaining Walls

Inspect paver patios and walkways for shifting, settling, and washed-out joint sand. Check retaining walls for bulging, cracks, or leaning that can signal saturated backfill and failing drainage behind the wall.

Drainage & Erosion Channels

Clear debris from downspouts, catch basins, and drain grates so water can move freely again. Map any new erosion channels the flood carved out — they reveal where your grading or drainage needs reinforcement before the next big storm.

When to Call a Professional

Foundation & Structural Concerns

If water pooled against your foundation, or you see new cracks, settling hardscape, or a leaning retaining wall, bring in a professional. These are signs of drainage failure that can worsen quickly and threaten structures around your property.

Landscape Assessment

When damage is widespread — leaning trees, major erosion, failed drainage, or plantings you’re unsure how to save — a professional assessment protects your investment. Sandvig Services can evaluate the full picture and build a recovery plan.
